(old Cretan couplets)
Many years ago, when we were children, we would enter Sfentoni Hole again and again. In the dim candlelight we used to see -less with our eyes and more with our imagination- bizarre, eerie figures. As the crystals of the stalagmitic material shone, we were given the impression that it was gold. We felt tiny before the columns which rose up to the roof. In the course of time the cave became more known and the access to it easier. The preservation of the cave became a necessity for its own protection since many visitors –deliberately or unwittingly- caused damages to the stalagmitic décor. Today, after efforts which have lasted for decades, the cave can be visited only by a specific number of visitors. However, we are aware of the fact that the problems do not stop here. Bearing in mind that the cave can and should play an important developmental role in the area, we sought ways in order for it to gain distinction.
Sfentoni Cave is considered as one of the five best preserved caves of Greece and the first one in Crete. Since the description of its stalagmitic and stalactitic décor cannot be depicted in this site, we would like to invite you to visit it in order to see for yourselves this wonder of nature.
